Der Fachinformatker Systemintegration kurz FISI ist mit einem sehr komplexen Aufgabenfeld ausgestattet. Die sehr schnelle Entwicklung im IT-Sektor erfordert auch beim „ausgelernten“ Fachinformatiker stetige Weiterbildung und ein hohes Maß an Interesse an seinem Beruf. Die Aufgaben erstrecken sich in der Regeln von der Planung und Konzeptionierung eines Netzwerkes, über die Installation und Integration bis hin zur Instandhaltung und Wartung. Weiterhin ist er für betreuende Aufgaben rund um die o.g. Kerntätigkeiten zuständig.
Dieses können Mitarbeiterschulungen, Update-Management, Netzwerk-Zertifizierung und vieles mehr sein. Im Grunde ist es ein extrem vielseitiges Berufsfeld welches niemals langweilig wird.

Der Arbeitsalltag eines Fachinformatiker Systemintegration ist in der Regel mit den unterschiedlichsten Aufgabenstellungen ausgefüllt. Angenommen er ist in einem Systemhaus tätig (die Königsklasse) so kann er in der einen Woche Tag für Tag an einem konkreten Problem arbeiten, beispielsweise eine Standortvernetzung zur Anbindung eines Filialbetriebes an die Zentrale, in der nächsten Woche aber er dann, ebenso beispielsweise, jeden Tag an einer anderen Herausforderung. Er installiert bestellte Hardware vor Ort, implementiert Skripte welche er nach Kundenwunsch angepasst hat in Softwarelösungen, updated einen Proxy-Server bzw. eine Firewall um die Internetverbindung eines Kunden zu sichern, berät eine Kundin zum Thema Arbeitsplatz-Ergonomie und so weiter.
Auch wenn dem angehenden Fachinformatiker manche der zuvor genannten Begriffe bisher noch nichts sagen oder sie kompliziert erscheinen, im Laufe der Ausbildung werdet ihr deren Bedeutung und Anwendung lernen. Der Beruf des Fachinformatiker Systemintegration ist zwar anstrengend aber auch extrem abwechslungsreich und immer spannend.
